2010 LA MARATHON TRAINING= OFFICIALLY BEGUN!

well! my [2010 LA marathon] training has OFFICIALLY begun! a few things that have recently helped to make it more "official"...

01] jen booked a room @ LOEWS in santa monica where we're staying for the first part of the trip [closer to the action + near the finish line], before heading down to the beach house in hermosa beach to unwind a bit post-race. already working on a list of restaurants + shops we're going to hit while we're down there- can't wait.

02] NEW SHOES! not a big deal to most people, but to marathon runners switching shoe brands is usually quite a deal [what a dork]- justifiable when considering how much time and suffering you go through with them- so! after 5 years of loyalty to asics, i shed the stability control and went with the lighter [mizuno wave rider 12's], and... so far so good!

03] finally dusted off my old garmin forerunner to start timing my runs in an attempt to pressure me into shaving of some unwanted minutes from my runs. sadly i averaged ~30 seconds slower per mile than last year, and ~1.5 minutes slower per mile than a couple years ago.
ALTHOUGH... i suppose that's a bit of apples and oranges considering how much hillier this area is than the beach trails in cali. i did manage a 37. 39 5-miler on the treadmill last week, so hopefully i'm a bit closer to my peak than garmin suggests.
on the bright side, with such slow times, i'm really looking forward to my times plummeting over the next ~4 months of training. here was today's out-and-back route...

04] and last but not least- my brand-new custom marathon training schedule! i'm sure i'll be doing a bit of tinkering with it after seeing how my legs respond to the mileage, but here it is so far: [2010 LA MARATHON TRAINING SCHEDULE]

2010 LA MARATHON training...

So! I've decided to FINALLY OFFICIALLY starting to train for next year's LA MARATHON on Nov. 1st.
After managing a weak 10-15 miles a week since Lily's birth [super tough finding the time to run with a newborn]], Jen and I are finally starting to get serious about building our base mileage- I was actually able to sneak in 22 miles this week...

I started last Sunday with this 6.5-miler [my first >5 mile run THIS YEAR!] with the hounds...

And then took another step towards getting serious by logging these somewhat hilly 5.5 miles the next day- Yes- QUITE tame compared to the height of my training but it's a [re]start...

... followed by a couple more of my normal 5-milers with the hounds later in the week, and ramping up to this 8-mile course to start next week's schedule...

I'm hoping to start my official training with a 10-miler on the 1st up into Juanita.

My next SERIOUS priority is incorporating some speed work to get my times back down- I might have to rely on the gym for due to the difficulty of swinging that type of stuff on the hills of Kirkland, but it's worked in the past so- that's that.

That's all,

NEW ROUTES...

in an attempt to get back into a more consistent running schedule, while still spending some time with lily in the mornings, ive started running from work a bit more during lunch. and my go-to 5-mile route is already getting a bit old, so here are a couple of new routes i'm adding to my repertoire to keep things interesting...

... still _considerably_ slower than just a couple years ago, but i'm really looking forward to getting back to boston-qualifying speed in the next year or so- maybe not another 3:07, but hopefully low enough for the male 35+ 3:15:00 that will be applicable next year.

6ish-mile kirkland route...

dusting off one of my old "out-and-back" routes in the process of ramping back up on my mileage...

... off with the hounds!

new kirkland 5.5 mile route...

trying to start increasing my mileage a bit from 3 days @ 5 miles... starting off with a simple .5 mile bump on this new route...

still CONSIDERABLY slower than i used to be [& _WAY_ off 3-hour marathon shape], but will hopefully be able to maintain a respectable speed over the next few months as we welcome patenaude junior onto the planet, in case we end up running new york @ the end of the year & possibly another.

running as exploration? what a novel concept...

i decided to shift away from the usual routes and try a new one today, through this fancy- pants neighborhood [yarrow point] in kirkland chocked full of some of the most gorgeous [and _expensive_] homes i've seen in the seattle area [including quite a few very impressive modern masterpieces] complete with some breath-taking views of lake washington [and killer hills].

it's really nice to shake off some of the structure of marathon training post race, to really milk a bit more enjoyment out of what running as exploration can provide.

the seattle marathon: what did i expect?...

so it's come and gone- the marathon i dreaded and looked forward to equally from the second i pushed "send" on the registration site. at around mile 23 or so yesterday i realized that i'd sorta set myself up for a ho hum situation...
sure every marathon finish is a "win", but for somebody who expects a little more than just completing a task from the effort, i realized that this time around, i hadn't really set a goal that i'd be very proud of.

upon completing my first marathon there was obviously quite a feeling of accomplishment for finishing period- and especially in under 4 hours. the second time around, i was able to set another personal record and @ 3:17, it had whetted my appetite for boston qualification. on my third marathon i learned a valuable lesson about seeking out fast courses [which napa was] and in doing so, picked tucson for my 4th PR attempt, and captured boston in the process.

after moving up to the hilly & rainy northwest though, my training has suffered a bit, and although i've tried convincing myself [regardless of the title of this blog] that i'm happy just adding another notch to my belt by finishing/ finishing in under 3:30... i don't think that it is.

so with that being said, i think after a small break i'm going to evaluate whether or not i think i'll be able to give an honest crack at a sub 3:00 [or at least boston qualifying sub 3:10], in the spring of next year. if not, then i might just lay off until jen & i are able to run new york together [a race that i'm _very_much_ looking forward to].

hmmm... i suppose i should talk about the seattle marathon a bit too...

first off, i ran a 3:27:31, the second half being a whopping 10 min. slower that the first [not good], averaging a 7:55 minute/ mile- erg!
and it never ceases to amaze me how poorly i pace myself by going out too quickly [6:40 first mile],
although like i mentioned, it didn't help that my garmin GPS, which i've become so dependent on for pacing, completely let me down.

very foggy, which made for some nice running whether, BUT!! ruined quite a bit of the vistas i was looking forward too,
and rendered my garmin GPS completely useless- no pacing, so splits, no credit for the mileage, and couldn't even read the time!
also... it was _NOT_ a fast course. aside from just looking at how far off the winner was from the world record [almost 30 minutes!],
it was quite hilly [the steep inclines in the last 5-6 miles was like a combo slap in the face and kick in the balls],
and by far the most winding course that i've ever run. yes. you can see that from the course map, but sometimes it takes some seeing something in person for it to really sink in.

oh! and the organization at the beginning of the race- bonkers! the event was split into marathon run, marathon walk, half marathon run, and half marathon run,
with nobody [that i could tell] to let the runners know where to go while waiting for their races.
and the announcers were 2 people who i seriously doubt had ever run anything over a mile, and had no apparent knowledge of anything marathon related.
oh! and a kid calling out splits at mile 24 was over 20 minutes off of the time!

hmmm... so in the end, i'm always glad i ran the course, but i'd seriously have to consider running this to anyone that doesn't live nearby-
and definitely would not recommend it as a boston qualifier or PR.

ok. that's it. had to get it out. there probably won't be another update until i decide on my next marathon.
